Today I was fortunate enough to take Lizzie to her friend's birthday party at the PCYC.

After watching the girls jumping and bouncing and having great fun, I got a little envious.

It is hard to believe that this was over 35 years ago but the story starts here. My desire to serve. I had many wonderful Primary teachers at church that I truly believe loved me. Sister Carol, Sister Lewis and Miffy (pictured below). Here she sits outside the meetinghouse with her primary class. I am the boy with the dark brown jumper.

Our Thai Buddy. Gap visited with us for 2 weeks as part of an exchange program. It was wonderful having him in the family. He was very well mannered and a delight to look after.

We all rode the 'Wild West' and got saturated. I didn't think any water splashed on Lisa's pants so I am not sure how they got wet!?? This was great fun!

Back Row: Jack - (16yo, Snack, Dug a hole dad or The Professor), Samantha - (15yo, Sam, Huh? or Speedy), Dale - (18yo, Dig or The General).
Middle Row: Lisa - (Uhh...very young, Lis, mum or She-who-must-be-obeyed), Scott - (42yo, Scott or Super-Humble-All round-Nice-Guy).

Each family is made up of characters with differing personalities and sometimes, just sometimes all the personalities blend together to make a good all round unit. I may be biased but I think this sums us up well.

Jack is attending Newstead college, loves to think and solve complex problems and easily is frustrated with 'unfair' situations. He loves to play basketball and socialise with friends. He is always forgetting or not knowing what is happening as he will often be off in his own world solving all the injustices that take place. He has a wicked laugh, knows when to be polite and mindful of others' feelings but most importantly he will always stand up for what he believes is right or true.

Samantha is artistic, and I mean very artistic. She is very good with drawings, paintings, 3D Shapes and colours. Her greatest desire is to be surrounded with trees and flowers and bushes in a the corner of a garden reading a book of romantic fantasy. She struggles to think badly of others or believe anyone would lie so this sometimes results in the label of 'GULLIBLE' if you get my meaning. She has a lovely smile and lovely LONG hair. Sam struggles to comprehend the concept of time, however and will often be found in the morning 'rushing' by gently and slowly brushing her hair.

Dale is a legend. He gets excited with the simplest of things. He has a unique ability to remember facts and numbers and will often have a suggested fix to a situation that hasn't even happened yet. At age 10 he navigated for me around the streets of Melbourne with complete accuracy. At one point I ignored his directions because 'I knew a better way' but was humbled and had to back-track to the route Dig was directing me. This impressed me but of course I didn't go on about it too much otherwise he gets a big head and starts to actually think he knows more than me. Like Jack and Sam, he struggles to tell falsehoods without quickly giving it away (only Lizzie has that mastered to perfection).

Lisa is a shy, reserved mum to everyone except those who know her well. She is an organiser, a fix-it (which means she loves to get in and fix programs to operate as intended and then moves on. She loves keeping the family united and moving together. Whether it be Family Home Evening, daily scripture study, family prayer or cleaning our room, she is the motivator. The home would literally implode without her as the boys would make a mess, the girls would nest in their room and I would just sit at the computer or doing church\schoolwork and ignore everything around me. Basically, it is because of her that any good thing comes out of this family.

Then there is me. Happy go lucky, don't get in my way or disturb me when sleeping type of guy. I love humour and anything that causes a stress-free environment.

Finally there is Lizzie. What can I say?? Lizzie has a wicked sense of humour (must be a good one because she laughs at everything I say!). She has a lovely singing voice but is too afraid to use it, to the anguish of Grandpa who wants to sing but .... well you get the picture. Lizzie is an allrounder, she is smart, athletic, funny and a real drama queen. Whenever she has to speak in front of people she has a nervous breakdown before hand. Lizzie loves it when we have family activities, any activity, doesn't matter what as long as we are together. To sum it up, Lizzie has a touch of everyone else in her which results in a well rounded and not-that-strange type of person.

Of course we cannot forget about Grandpa!! He keeps everyone in line. Barking instructions from his arm chair. Spends much of his waking hours reading because if he didn't read, so he tells us, his thoughts just keep mulling on church and the people in it. He wants to solve the problems of everyone. His health is not like it used to be and he struggles to get around without serious pain.

So this is my family. We sure are not perfect but we blend pretty well together. The strengths of one assist the weakness of another. The only problem is when we are separated because our individual flaws are exposed. We laugh at each other's faults and try to help each other improve but more than anything, we are extremely honest with each other and I believe this to be a good thing.
